5 Tips For Maintaining Your Dog’s Dental Hygiene
- 20/01/2018
For dog-parents, the only thing that matters is their furry friend’s well-being. We try to take every possible step to ensure our dog’s health, but at times we may overlook specific needs. One such mistake is neglecting oral hygiene. We stress on brushing our teeth after every meal, visit the dentist regularly but what about our dogs? They also need oral care otherwise it can have severe consequences on their health. The bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and adversely affect the liver, heart, and kidney.
If you have a puppy then now is the perfect time to teach the habit of brushing. If you have an adult dog, it isn't too late either. You can follow these tips for maintaining your dog’s dental health.
Brushing
Like I mentioned above, regular brushing is vital to prevent tartar buildup. However, for most dogs and their parents, brushing isn’t a favourite activity. It may seem difficult or too tiresome at first, but it’s worth the effort as it will protect your dog from periodontal disease. The more your pup’s teeth get affected, the higher amount you’d have to pay the vet for the treatments, so it may help you save some money.
Keep in mind that you’ll have to be very patient. Get pet-safe toothpaste for your pooch in his favourite flavour. First get your dog to be comfortable when you touch his teeth. Now introduce your pup to the toothpaste, apply a little quantity on your finger and rub it around the front teeth. You can wrap gauze around your finger while doing this. Gradually introduce the dog-toothbrush, let your dog lick the toothpaste off it, and then slowly use it to rub the front-teeth. It will take several tries for your dog to get accustomed to the new object, but be consistent.
Dental Chews
Chewing on raw bones helps clean your dog’s teeth and removes built-up plaque. You can either use the same natural method or get synthetic chews designed to clean up the bacteria and dirt off your pup’s teeth. There are various brands and types available in the market, just search the internet for the best dental chews for dogs.
Treats Can Help
Some dog treats can significantly improve dental health. Baby carrots, for instance, are one such food that you can let your dog chew on to scrub the teeth. You can give your pooch any other crunchy veggies or make treats at home such as potato chews.
Regular Vet Visits
No matter how regularly you brush your pup’s teeth, getting them checked by a vet is essential. You may have to get different X-rays done to be sure about hygiene. As your dog grows old, you’ll have to get him checked at least twice a year.
So gear up, get a toothbrush, and start brushing your dog’s teeth. Work together to make it a routine activity, and remember treats will help with the training.
