How To Travel With Your Dog: Top 3 Tips For Owners
- 22/05/2017
Travelling with a dog isn’t something you should take lightly. There’s a lot that can go wrong, so you’ll need to be prepared. In this post, we want to share 5 tips that owners should remember when travelling with their pooch. Let’s get started!
Tip #1: Pack The Right Stuff
First and foremost, you must pack your dog’s wants and needs. If you follow this tip, everything will run smoothly- guaranteed. However, if you forget the following items, it will make the process a lot rougher. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Medications: Is your dog currently taking any medications? If so, don’t forget them because it may be difficult to get them where you’re going.
- Food: If you’re travelling by bar, then bringing dog snacks can make your dog feel comfortable throughout the process.
- Grooming Products: Bring your dog’s shampoos, combs, wipes, brushes, and any other cleaning products you use on them.
- Cleaning Tools: Don’t forget to bring a waste bag, scooper, and leash in case your dog needs to poop and pee.
Don’t forget things like an extra collar, dog toys, and anything else that your pet may need. Once you’re on the road, it will be too late to come back and get them, so make sure you get everything.
Tip #2: Don’t Give Your Dog a Sedative For Flights
If you’re travelling via aeroplane, then do not give your dog a sedative for the flight. You might be thinking that this will help your pet get through the horror of being 30,000 feet in the air. But this is a mistake. Sedatives can affect your dog’s natural ability to maintain equilibrium, which obviously isn’t good. If you can choose a direct flight that’s quicker, make sure to do that.
Tip # 3: Clip Their Toenails Before Leaving
Whether you’re travelling by aeroplane or car, you should clip your dog’s toenails before leaving. And here’s why: Whether it be in a car or aeroplane, your pet is probably going to be very anxious. The anxiety can manifest as them scratching and clawing at things. By clipping them beforehand, it will prevent their nails from getting caught somewhere. This is an important, yet, commonly overlooked tip among dog owners.
Conclusion
The final tip we’ll leave you with is to make sure you choose a hotel that’s pet-friendly. That last thing you want is to arrive at the hotel at 2 A.M. only to realise that they won’t accept your dog. Good luck on your trip fellow dog lovers!
