Preparing Your Dog For Grooming
- 19/04/2017
As many dog owners know only too well, preparing your pet for grooming, particularly if it is their first time can be challenging, to say the least. Although it is a good idea and recommended to introduce your dog to the grooming process while they’re still young, many puppies get nervous when around loud noises and taking your pet out of their comfort zone to head to a groomer also means unfamiliar environments for your dog which they may not enjoy either.
However grooming your dog has to be done if you want to keep your pet clean and healthy and getting your dog as used to the process as possible will definitely be worthwhile further down the line when your pet doesn’t even bat an eyelid when heading off the groomers or getting their nails clipped.
With this in mind, there are a number of ways you can familiarise your pet with the noises and objects they will encounter while being groomed. Preparing your dog for grooming will not only make them feel far more comfortable when actually being cleaned but will also allow you as the owner to feel a bit more at ease knowing you have done all you can to ensure your pet is as used to the process as possible.
Top 3 Tips for Preparing Your Dog for Grooming
Improve Your Dog’s Attention Span – Now this is far easier than done but bear with us here. Dogs, whether they’re fully grown or still puppies are easily distracted, as any dog owner knows it doesn’t take much for them to be attracted to or disturbed by virtually anything that moves.
This means when it comes to grooming your pet and getting them to sit still for any length of time, the longer their attention span the better. One way to try and improve this is work on commands from an early age if you can get your puppy to sit and then slowly introduce distractions with time you will hopefully improve their concentration.
Introduce Your Pet to Busy Environments – If you plan on taking your dog to a professional groomer than it is more than likely the shop will be busy with both humans and other dogs. This can be a disaster if your pet is nervous in new situations and can bring on anxiety.
To ease this fear you should introduce your dog to noisy and busy environments slowly, helping them to overcome any anxiety and allowing them to relax in new places.
Using Practice Objects – Now this one may sound a little strange but it definitely helps when it comes to preparing your dog for being groomed. While having their nails or hair clipped your dog will be held in a number of unfamiliar positions and have clippers and trimmers running very close to their coat and eyes.
To familiarise your pet with this experience you can use practice objects that you run in the same manner as a groomer would and see how your dog reacts. Over time they will become at ease and be unworried by the experience.
