Five Top Tips for Choosing the Best Dog Or Cat Carrier
- 11/03/2017
Dog carriers – they’re the must-have accessories for devoted dog owners throughout the world. Whether you want to transport your chihuahua in style or ensure your pug is never without comfort, they are undoubtedly a fantastic addition to any dog’s collection of accessories. What’s more, they are also really practical and are a safe and effective way to safely transport dogs in cars, planes and more.
There are absolutely loads of different types of dog carriers on the market, but you’ll only find the very best when you shop at Top Dog Apparel, which offers your dog the height of fashion and comfort. Choosing which dog carrier to buy can be a tough decision, though, so we’ve come up with these handy tips for you…
Size Matters
When it comes to purchasing a good carrier, size definitely matters – and this means that getting one that’s too small or too big is definitely not advised. The reason for having a carrier that is big enough is pretty clear – your dog needs the extra space to comfortably move around and lay down if it wants to – however many people don’t realise that buying one that’s too big is a big mistake. This is particularly important when choosing Pet Cat Carriers which are, obviously, much smaller than their dog counterpart.
There are two reasons for this, with the first being that larger carriers are simply more difficult to carry around. The main reason has more to do with hygiene, though, as a larger dog carrier will have more free space, and dogs might be tempted to use this space as a toilet. This won’t happen with the correctly sized carrier as dogs generally refuse to go to the toilet where they sleep. The risk of accidents is particularly apparent in younger dogs or those with a nervous disposition.
What’s the Cost?
Dog carriers come in loads of different shapes and sizes, and this means that they also come in many different price brackets. It is possible to buy some dog carriers for hundreds and hundreds of pounds, but you really have to ask yourself one question: is the cost really worth it? After all, your dog will be just as comfortable in a carrier costing £50 instead!
Of course, dog carriers can be a great fashion statement so you’ll have to pay slightly more for the flashiest ones. Just make sure the carrier doesn’t have any expensive attachments, though, which your dog might enjoy snacking on while your back is turned!
Don’t Buy Second Hand
You might have seen a dog carrier on a site such as eBay, and you’re now tempted to make the purchase. After all, it’s half its normal price, and it really doesn’t look all that bad, does it? Regardless of how it looks, it will still have smells from other dogs in it and your pooch quite possibly won’t like that at all. Then there are the hygiene issues to consider, as you never know what another dog has done in that carrier.
Check Regulations
If you are planning on using your dog carrier for air travel, you really must check the regulations laid down by a specific airline. They will stipulate certain things about the carrier, and if you are unable to meet them, you might find yourself having to leave your pooch at the boarding gate. You might even find that dogs aren’t allowed as hand luggage on a flight and that they have to be checked into the hold instead. If this is the case, a carrier won’t be sufficient.
Style
Of course, the last consideration to make is style, as a dog carrier is nearly as much about your look as it is about the dog’s comfort. You’ll find loads of different dog carriers out there, ranging from bright pink ones through to ones with leopard-print accessories, so you’ll definitely find the one to suit you. It should go without saying though that your dog comes first, so you should ensure that they are safe and comfortable in any carrier you buy.
With the five tips above, you should find it really easy to purchase the best possible dog carrier. As long as you’re able to balance your own personal style with the comfort and wellbeing of your dog, you should find that getting a dog carrier is an absolutely fantastic purchase!
