There are many reasons, and also in many ways, to exercise. In the United States, more than one-third of adults (34.9%) are obese. Medical problems and medical costs skyrocket as we continue to gain weight. If there is ever a time to get moving, it is now. If you own a pet, chances are your pet needs to get some exercise and this is the perfect opportunity to get off the couch. When you own a pet, you are likely passionate about meeting his needs; feeding, exercising and loving him. This sense of responsibility tends to get more people out walking. How can you say no those glassy brown eyes or wagging tail of a pup that can't wait to go outside?

1. Clip on a leash and head outside. This is the obvious choice to exercise your dog. A stroll around the neighbourhood or through the park is easy and fun. There are also hands-free leashes. You just need to strap the belt around your waist and clip the leash onto it.

2. A pet stroller is a good option for the dog that cannot walk very far, has an injury or recent surgery, or is just older and less mobile. Your dog can walk part of the way and then take a ride for the remainder of the outing. Most dogs enjoy a ride in a pet stroller. There are strollers that ride high or low to the ground and ones that will accommodate pets up to 150 pounds.

3. If you like to bike ride, then you have several options. You can get a bike leash that connects to your seat post and allows your dog to safely run beside your bike.

4. A pet bike trailer connects to your wheel spoke and pulls your dog behind you. These trailers come with the tow bar needed to attach to your fat bike. There are trailers for small dogs and ones for dogs weighing up to 150 pounds.

5. If you have a smaller dog, then consider a pet bike basket that connects to the front of your handlebars. Pet baskets can be found with sun shades and they can double as a tote or shoulder carrier.

6. A pet backpack or front carrier is another carrier option for your small dog while riding a bicycle. Pet backpacks and front carriers are generally for dogs that weigh less than 20 pounds.

Pet obesity is also a national problem. We sometimes indulge our pets too much with fancy treats and meals that are too large. Then we don't get them outside to play enough. Now is the time to take action and get active.
