5 Summer Safety Tips To Remember to Enjoy Your Dog Walks This Season
- 18/05/2014
With the temperature climbing up to 100 degrees, it's a tall order that dog owners know these summer safety tips so they can take their furballs for their daily walks. The scorching heat should not stop us from enjoying outdoor activities. With enough knowledge, it is still possible to enjoy the hot sunny days.
1. Catch your breath
The most important thing you need to be aware of is that most dogs cannot perspire like us. Especially for thick furred dogs, the heat can be trapped in their body and cause heat exhaustion or even a heat stroke. Dogs pant to regulate the temperature in their body. If you see your dog panting heavily, give him time to catch his breath. Let him lie down and pant for a little while.
2. Hydrate
We perspire a lot during these hot days. It is common sense that we should consume much water when we perspire a lot. On the other hand, you may not see your dog perspiring but you should know when to let him drink. Panting is one sign that your dog needs water. Excessive drooling is code red for "Please, give me some water!"
3. Wear Protective Gear
A hat and a pair of sunglasses are very useful gears to keep your cool. They are enough to make your body think that it is in cool place. They can also protect your eyes from intense sunlight. Your dog can also benefit from a nice hat or a pair of doggie glasses. After all, dogs need protection from the sun, too!
4. Take a Dive
What better way is there to enjoy the sunny days but to dive in to the water! Instead of taking your daily route, take your dog to a dog-friendly beach or a nearby lake or river. If you have a small kiddie pool or a small basin for your dog to splash in, that would be perfect! It's also a perfect way to bond with your children and dogs. However, if you don't have a small basin or pool to splash in, the sprinklers or a water hose would be fun as well.
5. Find a Shade
Walking under the blazing sun for long durations can make one get tired quickly. It can even cause sunburn for furless dogs. Staying under the sun can also make you dehydrated quickly. So if you have a choice, to play under the sun or to play under a tree, choose the tree. If possible, choose the forest! For us humans, wearing sun block is possible. However, it is not applicable to dogs so it's your job to restrict them from playing under the sun for long periods.
This summer is the best season to spend time with the whole family. Let your dog and kids bond in a completely different setting by going on adventures like hiking and camping. With these summer safety tips, you will be able to enjoy the season despite the hot temperatures.
