How To Implement Obedience For Yorkies
- 18/06/2013
Unlike a Min Pin or breeds like that, a Yorkie is a lot smarter because of the terrier factor. As such, Yorkie obedience will be a lot easier for you. Moreover, because these little dogs have the great character of having intelligence, loyalty, and courage, it can help you if you can nurture these traits through Yorkie obedience.
However, it is a fact that Yorkies are so strong willed and independent. Because of this fact, they can sometimes be a real problem when it comes to training this breed of dog. One of the immediate obedience item you have to deal with right away is you have to have a training plan for your Yorkie. You need to set time for training your Yorkie consistently. Set aside some time every day or every other day if you can. Yorkies need structure and consistency.
Your Yorkie's age is the biggest factor here. If your pup is less than one year old, you can proceed to do training on your own. Most people agree that it is recommended that right after your Yorkie is past the 8 weeks old age that you start training your Yorkie. The fact is that the older the Yorkie, the more difficult they are to train. The reason for this is that an older Yorkie becomes settled in his ways, and at that point has accepted the bad habit or behavior. It may benefit you to seek out a professional if your Yorkie is over a year old. Or the consistency factor for the obedience must be implemented.
When putting together training for your Yorkie obedience lessons, consider these important key points and kind of reflect of them for a moment:
-A firm approach and consistency is very important when training your Yorkie. To your expectations, make no exceptions. Have appropriate responses and follow up on certain Yorkie behaviors with diligent. So put together a schedule for the training and stick with it.
-What has been found to be highly effective is the use of positive reinforcement. When your Yorkie exhibits desirable behaviors and is complying with your commands, show them positive reinforcement. It can be in the form of a doggy treat, a happy verbal complement, or a scratch on the back.
-Use commands that indicates the start of your Yorkie obedience. You must train your dog to respond to commands like "sit," "stay," and others. What helps Yorkies and Yorkie owners is a clicker to help their Yorkie connect to the behavior that is expected. Other people rely on positive reinforcement exclusively.
-You are the alpha pack leader: you have to establish yourself that way. If your Yorkie understands and views you as the leader, it is more likely that your dog will follow your commands. If you allow your Yorkie to crown himself/herself the alpha pack leader, they will think they are the leader of the home. This is not conducive to training purposes.
-Obvious but over looked is using crate training as a method of training your Yorkie to become house broken and to deal with his or her separation anxiety. Separation anxiety for Yorkies can result in annoying behaviors like the following: chewing on furniture, barking too much, and so on.
As you can see, there are important elements that are needed in Yorkie obedience and the one factor that needs to be understood with Yorkies or any dog really is consistency and structure.
