Working Dogs: The Giant Schnauzer Is A Herder From Germany and Makes a Good Pet For The Family

  • 25/09/2012

This is the fifth and final article I am writing about working dogs. The subject of this article is the Giant Schnauzer, which is one of three in the Schnauzer breed. This dog belongs to the working dog group, while the other two are smaller and are classified as terriers. The Giant Schnauzer is a large and powerful breed. It has a lifespan of 12-15 years. Its temperament can be described as intelligent, kind, and loyal. The dog can also be strong-willed, dominant, and powerful. The height of both male and female Giant Schnauzers can be up to 28 inches, with weights of up to 79 pounds. Colors of this breed can be tan and black, salt and pepper, black, or fawn.

The history of Giant Schnauzers dates from 1832, when the dogs were used in Bavaria to herd pigs and cattle. At that time the breed was also known as oberlanders. The breed did not actually become standardized until 1923. Breeders used the standard Schnauzer to help establish the German Giant Schnauzer.

There were basically two types at that time, the oberlanders and the Munich. After World War I, the breed was diminished in number.

This dog also makes a good family pet, but care must be taken that it is properly socialized. It is recommended that the dog be adopted by the family as a puppy, so it can be allowed to grow and become socialized naturally. Although generally friendly by nature, this can sometimes turn into aggression around strangers. Both firmness and gentleness are required when raising these dogs. The dog does have a powerful bite, which would be an unpleasant experience for a stranger or burglar.

The Giant Schnauzer is susceptible to several diseases, including autoimmune disorders, Crohn's Disease, and anemia. Other health problems include incontinence and epilepsy. Because of its large size, this dog can also have bone and joint problems. It is important that the dog be exercised daily.

The dog is good in various competitions. These include herding, tracking, and agility trials. The animal does have a strong herding instinct which makes it a good competitor in these types of events. It can also be trained to participate in other competitions.

The Giant Schnauzer is a very good breed for the family and makes an excellent work dog, too. Like other work dogs I have written about, this dog was developed in Germany. It makes a good companion if trained properly. Because of its gentle nature it would be a good pet. It would also be a good guard dog to protect both family and property.

This concludes the series of articles I am writing about work dogs. I hope my readers have enjoyed what I have written. Please come back soon as I will continue to write interesting articles about dogs. I look forward to writing many articles and I promise to keep my readers entertained.
