Siberian Husky Biting - How to Stop Puppy Biting
- 16/08/2012
One of the most common problems that Husky owners will face at some point is biting. This issue often begins early on in puppy-hood and then escalates as the dog reaches maturity due to improper handling of the habit. If you want to stop Husky biting in your puppy, then you will want to read on. Specifically, we'll cover the reason why Huskies bite, handling biting in young puppies, and handling biting in older puppies. This information will help to curb your Husky's undesirable behavior.
Huskies and other dogs mainly bite for one simple reason; they bite to form dominance in a pack relationship. Even though you're human, your Husky still sees you as part of his pack. He is basically seeking submission whenever he bites you or other family members. A Husky that is allowed to dominate the household can quickly and easily become a huge problem when he reaches maturity.
Even in young puppies, Husky biting must be discouraged. There will definitely be times when your young puppy nips or mouths at you. Many owners do not handle this behavior properly because they think it's cute at first and fail to recognize that it can escalate to dangerous biting when the dog reaches maturity. This type of seemingly harmless biting must be discouraged regardless of how cute it may seem, as allowing it will signal to your Husky that he is the leader of the pack. Stopping biting habits is easiest when Huskies are still young puppies, but it can still be handled even in older puppies.
In older puppies, this behavior is no longer cute and becomes obnoxious. Older puppies will continue to play-bite in order to seek submission. You must show dominance so that he will respect you as the alpha. Use humane methods of showing dominance, such as eating before him, entering doorways before him, and making him move out of the way instead of going around him. No matter what age your puppy is, the biting habit can be stopped.
It is crucial that you stop your Husky puppy's biting behavior, regardless of his age, so that the problem will not escalate when he gets older. It is much easier to prevent biting in puppies than it is to correct potentially dangerous biting in adults. Apply the principles in this article to stop your Husky's biting before it becomes a real problem. Also be sure to consult a professional trainer if the problem gets out of hand, as you don't want to be liable for any incidents that may occur.
