The Cocker Spaniel's Reputation -- True or False?
- 01/10/2011
A cocker spaniel's reputation is true, when people talk how comfortable it is as a gun dog and as a household pet. They are great with children and provoke admiration of laughter from the whole family. There are a few health and temperament issues which you should be aware of, before you bring your cocker spaniel home.
These dogs can be shy unless they are exposed to people at a young age. They are loving but can be difficult to housebreak, and they do respect leadership. Basically they are easy to train but must not be allowed to develop the typical small dog syndrome. This is where a smaller dog feels he is the pack leader to any human he comes in contact with. This can lead to other behaviour problems.
Right away you must establish that you are the pack leader, and give the dog mental activity and physical activity daily. If you don't do this, the dog will become fearful and vicious because their minds are not given a chance to become calmer during the daytime. If you start the training early, your cocker spaniel will be trustworthy, sweet, charming, and cheerful.
When a dog has long ears like the cocker spaniel does, it can suffer from Otitis Externa. This may prevent air from entering the dog's ear and it creates a humid environment. Foreign bodies, and parasitic microorganisms can grow in this environment. The diseases is an inflammation of the ear canal but it can also be caused by fleas, ticks, and ear mites. To help cure this disease, you can flush your dogs ears with antibacterial solution and occasionally, a prescription anti-inflammatory.
Constant vigilance is necessary of your long-eared cocker spaniel so you can become aware of any changes to their ears. Cockers can also get two eye conditions. One is called progressive retinal atrophy. This is normally a hereditary disease and can lead to blindness or night blindness. Make sure the breeder is reputable and has a family history on hand for your potential pet.
Canine glaucoma is increasing fluid pressure in a dog's eye. Dogs should be observed for changes in vision, and the condition can be treated. Be vigilant regarding your cocker spaniel's temperament and health and your dog will provide wonderful companionship for many years. In reality, observing and watching your pet as you would with any other member of your family, will keep it healthy and happy.
