Red And White Setter - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Red And White Setter
- 15/01/2011
Breed Description
Medium-sized breed of well-proportions and powerful build, the Red and White Setter has been primarily bred as gun dogs. These dogs weigh an average between 50-75 pounds, and stands 22-26 inches in height.
Coat
The Red and White Setter have a fine and silky hair that is commonly called feathering. These are usually seen on the legs, and some on the flank, that extends to the throat and chest. They have flat, straight, and short hair on the head, legs, and other parts of their body.
Activity
Red and White Terrier require a great deal of exercise to keep them in good shape. The idle setter will likely demonstrate behavioural problems, and sometimes can even become destructive. Walks or runs on a daily basis are encouraged, with a lot of play time in securely fenced open areas.
Temperament
The Red and White Setter are fun-loving and highly spirited dogs. They love playing, and are comical when it comes to pleasing the family. This breed is excellent with children. In fact, these affectionate dogs love playing hide and seek with children. These games can be a form of mental stimulation these setters need. However, these dogs do not make great guard dogs. Although they would announce arrival of a stranger by barking, they tend to gladly welcome people and other animals to their homes. Rather than being aggressive, these dogs will accept new comers with the alluring wagging of the tail.
Overview
The Red and White Setter is a setter virtually resembling the temperament and use of its cousin, the Irish setter. However, they are most often used as working gun dogs.
Care
The Red and White Setter are easy to care for. Their coats would require brushing regularly with firm bristle brush to keep it at their best condition. The feathering that occurs on their coat tend to collect debris and dirt, particularly if they are taken hunting. These can be cleaned by combing using a comb or fingers. Feathering can also be trimmed, but this should be done at a minimum as this destroys the natural exterior of this breed.
Training
The Red and White Setter can be difficult to handle without proper training. These dogs will do best when exercised prior to training. This should however be done at an early age, as they tend to develop bad habits easily during puppyhood. They thrive on human interaction. They will jump just to gain attention, and will chew destructively if not corrected early on. Ensuring that this breed is trained starting at an early age is a must to avoid them from acquiring bad habits.
Character
The Red and White Setter is an affectionate breed of dog that will go great with other animals and children. With no guarding instinct, this breed is generally intelligent, highly energetic, and lovable.
