Italian Greyhounds: Possibly the Best Dog Breed That Exists

  • 01/04/2016

There are few things I enjoy about rising before the sun and crawling out of my warm, snugly covers in the morning, but when I stumble into the family room to open the cage that 'unleashes my hound,' I'm greeted with a wagging tail and a heated little body that rubs up against me like a cat walking by furniture. Morning breath kisses are somehow more acceptable from a soft, bendy-eared, ball of light and energy.

If you don't understand, perhaps you might consider the Italian Greyhound breed. While they're expensive and nearly impossible to fully potty train, IG's cozy their way into the deepest parts of your forgiving heart and make it futile to attempt another breed. Not convinced?

1. They're Small.

While many breeds get in the way as you're trying to walk by, require a large yard to run in, or have that 'big dog smell,' Italian Greyhounds are small, clean, and easy to take care of. They don't require much besides your love.

2. They're Funny.

Lots of dog breeds can be a real yawn fest just lying around or begging for food. IG's are not your typical breed. They fold their legs in strange ways, bounce around like kangaroos, dramatically sniff and hunt down every tiny crumb in your house, and are masters at darting quickly from one room to another as they race and whiz by with cougar-like speed.

3. They're Quiet.

Forget those yappy Chihuahuas and Yorkies. Italian Greyhounds are just as small and cute and they don't bark. Literally... you might hear a tiny bark, maybe once per day while they're playing. It's rare and usually provoked. They certainly don't bark at anything outside or just to hear themselves speak. Ever.

4. They're Fast.

Unlike certain sloth breeds, IG's are super fast and agile. If you like adventuring outdoors, walking, running, or racing, this breed was made for you. Clocked at almost 30 mph, these little guys are actually used for lure course racing.

5. They're Clean.

If you're tired of picking gobs of fur off of your kitchen floor, look no further. These dogs have very thin, coarse fur that doesn't shed much and is ridiculously easy to clean. Most of the time you can quickly rub them down with a warm wash cloth and they're good as new.

6. They're Friendly.

This isn't a Chow, my friend. Italian Greyhounds are friendly, loving and lovable. They adore all people regardless of age or gender. No growling, nipping, or territorial issues here. They quickly run up to greet everyone wagging their tails ferociously while they attempt to lick you to death.

7. They're Happy.

Have you ever met a depressed dog? That isn't rhetorical, I have. Dogs have personalities just like people and I've met a few whiny, bored, restless dogs that were more depressed than Edgar Allan Poe. Italian Greyhounds are probably the happiest dogs you'll ever meet. They forgive quickly, love intensely, have lots of passion and energy, and unless they're asleep, that tail is wagging.

If I haven't convinced you to go buy or adopt an Italian Greyhound by now, I'm afraid you should check your pulse and seek medical attention immediately!!!

All kidding aside, I have had many loving pets in my life but I continuously return to this breed. They have so much to offer and so few people seem aware of their existence.

If you're searching for a special addition to your family or for a little kind friend to love, maybe give the Italian Greyhound a chance. Just don't be surprised at the speedy rate in which they have you swooning.
