Is A Weimaraner The Right Breed Of Dog For You?

  • 13/03/2015

The Weimaraner is a wonderful dog with their noble faces and lanky gray bodies. However, the question still remains are they the right breed for you? This article will aim to answer this question for you.

To make a Weimaraner a good pet it requires lots of love and care. They have significantly high energy levels. They were breeds that were originally used in hunting and would do so all day. They regularly suffer from separation anxiety.

However, this does not imply that you cannot enjoy having with one as part of the family. All you have to do is know how to deal with them. The first thing that you need to do is be in good health and lead an active lifestyle. The Weimaraner isn't a good pet for the couch potato. They love to run, play, and walk all day long. They have seemingly endless amounts of energy that they are born with.

The separation anxiety need not worry you since there are plenty of ways to deal with it. If you work from home or your job allows you to be with your dog all day long, then it's better for you. Your Weimaraner is probably going to bond with either you or another member of your family. Your new gray pal is going to be wanting to spend all the time with that person.

Some medications and crate training sometimes helps with the separation anxiety in Weimaraners. However, pill popping is not something that you should be taking lightly. Consult your vet first about the mood medications for your dog. You will enjoy the love from Weimaraner more without him being under medication all the time.

About temperament, the Weimaraner will get along with almost everybody. With strangers, the Wamaraner may be shy at first, but they do love the high energy in children. Remember however that the dog is fairly large, with an adult standing at least a couple of feet tall, and weighing as much as 85lbs. You therefore should be careful when allowing younger children around such a dog. It isn't entirely impossible that the Weimaraner might unintentionally hurt a young child since the dog is quite big.

Weimaraners love to eat, and this is a fact that you always need to remember. Therefore it is good to always ensure that you can afford the food before investing in the dog. Health concerns in the Weimaraner include hip Dysplasia as well as other ailments and diseases common to larger dog breeds. Ensure that you take your puppy to the vet regularly.
