Which Facts Should You Know About The Whippet?
- 25/03/2013
The Whippet, often called the "Snapdog", is a hound breed of dog. They feature an appearance that resembles the Greyhound. It was in the 1700s the breed is assumed to have first came into existence. They were originally used for poaching rabbits. These days they're a popular choice as a racing, therapy or companion dog. Features like their sensitive temperament and love for running make them easily identifiable. They're known to have come from England and their earlier ancestors are the original Greyhound and other smaller dogs.
They're classified as a medium sized dog. The appropriate female dimensions are 20-30 pounds and a height of 18-21 inches, whereas the male size is 25-40 pounds and a height of 19-22 inches. Their personality is well-known to be sensitive, gentle and devoted. They can be unsuitable as a guard dog, as they are mostly friendly with people they're not familiar with. Compared with all other breeds, they are confirmed to be fairly clever, and rank equal 51st when being trained to comprehend new commands.
They're suitable for a family pet, since they are good with kids. They don't combine well with other animals such as cats and other small animals they may see as prey. One fairly easy task is looking after their coat. They need proper grooming every 8 to 10 weeks, and minimal brushing every week or so. They like having a small backyard so they have plenty of space, but can be suitable for living in an apartment.
They're primarily longer-lived, like many medium sized dog breeds, and have an expected life of 12-15 years. They're susceptible to heart disease, but their major health risk is eye disorders. Activities like agility, racing, running or playing games will provide them with hours of fun. They have a moderate amount of energy, and that means they need long walks each day to prevent the development of bad habits.
You must be willing to meet their needs for exercise and attention if you choose to buy the Whippet. They're ideal for active owners with a love for running, but not an ideal choice for households with other small animals. Here are just a few facts you will find attractive about the Whippet:
- Perhaps the main reason why dog lovers find this breed so attractive is seen in that it has a very sensitive nature that is easy to become attached to.
- One more characteristic people find appealing in regards to them is they have few health issues and are easy to care for due to their minimal level of grooming required.
- Another thing that's lovable regarding them is they make the perfect running partner for anyone who loves to jog.
