Which Facts Should You Know About The Pekingese?
- 24/03/2013
The Pekingese (also known as the "Peke" or "Lion Dog") is part of the toy dog breed group. They have big eyes, a curly tail, a squashed face and long fur that mostly comes in gold. It was during ancient times about 2,000 years ago the breed is thought to have first originated. Acting as companions to the Chinese Imperial Court is the reason they were first bred for. They are a common selection as a companion dog for less active owners, older people or apartment dwellers in the modern day. They can be characterized by their appearance that is halfway between a monkey and lion as well as their bold character and great affection towards their owner. They were developed from dogs descended from the first ancestral wolves and are known to have come from ancient China.
They are categorized as a small sized breed of dog. The suggested dimensions are 6-9 inches tall and a weight of 10 pounds. They're well-known for their brave, regal and self-important manner. The breed is generally slow to show affection towards people they're not familiar with, but their small size means they are unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed ranks 73rd in comparison with all other breeds when being trained to understand new obedience instructions, and are proven to be fairly intelligent.
They are not always tolerant with children, which makes them not the best choice for a family pet. Other pets such as cats and other dogs can get along peacefully with them. One time-consuming chore is looking after their coat. They call for full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks, and frequent brushing of their coat once every day. They can be suitable for living in an apartment, but love to have a small backyard that gives them space to run around.
As is the case with a good number of small sized breeds, they're for the most part long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their main health issue is heart problems, and they're also vulnerable to eye problems, allergies and breathing problems. They can be entertained with activities like play sessions or running around the yard. They have a low amount of energy, which calls for only short 20 or 30 minute walks each day to avoid hyperactivity or other bad habits.
If you choose the Pekingese you should be able to spend a lot of time grooming and giving plenty of companionship. They're a perfect choice for less active owners or retirees, but not an ideal option for a guard dog or more active owners. Here are a few qualities you might find appealing about the Pekingese:
- Quite a few dog lovers find this breed pretty attractive, and one of the most important reasons is that it is very affectionate and makes one of the greatest companion dogs.
- One of the other reasons why dog owners like them is they have a brave and feisty manner that gives them a unique personality.
- Another characteristic regarding them that is attractive is their minimal level of energy means you only need to take them for short walks to tire them out.
