Which Facts Do You Need To Know About The Shih Tzu?

  • 25/03/2013

The Shih Tzu (also called the "lion dog") is a toy dog. They have a non-shedding coat that comes in many colors. The breed is assumed to have first came into existence in the 17th century with origins as old as 10,000 years. They were initially raised for providing companionship to the Chinese royal family. They are popular as a companion dog for apartment dwellers or allergy sufferers these days. They are recognizable by their playful and affectionate nature plus their hypoallergenic coat. The breed is thought to have first existed in China and are a descendant of unknown Tibetan breeds, the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese.

They are identified as a small sized breed. The recommended male and female measurements are 8-11 inches tall with a weight of 9-16 pounds. Their disposition is well-known to be playful and affectionate though sometimes stubborn. The breed is typically trusting towards people they're not familiar with, and this plus their small size can make them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is ranked 70th compared with every other dog when being trained to comprehend new obedience commands, and aren't known to be highly clever.

They are somewhat suitable for a family pet, as they are playful towards children. Other animals such as other dogs and cats can live peacefully with them. Taking care of their coat is a demanding task. They require regular brushing through their coat once every day, and a full-body groom once every 2-3 weeks. They can be suitable for apartment life, but like having a small backyard so they have plenty of space.

They're predominantly longer-lived, as with a good number of small sized breeds, with a life expectancy of 10-15 years. They can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, eye problems or breathing difficulties, but their major health problem is IVD. Things like playing with a toy or running in the park will give them plenty of enjoyment. They need short walks each day to prevent the threat of hyperactivity as a result of their low to medium degree of energy.

If you choose to buy the Shih Tzu you ought to be prepared to spend a lot of time grooming and give them lots of attention. They're not an ideal choice for people with boisterous children, but a good choice for families with older children or seniors. Possibly the main reason dog lovers find this breed particularly appealing is the fact it has a lion-like appearance and affectionate temperament that makes it easy to love - plus it is also hypoallergenic.
