Which Facts Do You Need To Know About The Pomeranian?

  • 25/03/2013

The Pomeranian, also called the "Pom", is a toy breed. They feature a foxlike appearance and a fluffy coat that comes in several colours. It was during the mid 1700s the breed is believed to have first appeared, during which time they were initially used for herding sheep. These days they are popular as a companion or show dog. They can be recognized by their powder puff appearance and energetic temperament. They were supposedly developed from the German Spitz and other Arctic working dogs and are assumed to have originated in the region between Germany and Poland once called Pomerania.

They are identified as a tiny sized breed. The suggested male and female measurements are 8-11 inches high and a weight of 3-7 pounds. Their disposition is famously known as being busy, attentive and curious. They are generally reserved towards people they haven't met, but their small size can mean they are unsuitable as a protection dog. The breed is confirmed to be quite intelligent, and ranks 23rd in comparison with every other dog when learning new obedience instructions.

They are not always suitable for a family pet, seeing as they are not the best towards children. They do mix peacefully with other pets such as pets they live with from an early age. Grooming them is actually a straightforward job. They need a full-body groom every 6 to 8 weeks, and small brushing every week. They very easily be suitable for staying in an apartment, but love to have a small backyard (though one is not always necessary) so they have plenty of room.

As with many tiny sized breeds, they're largely long-lived with an expected life of 12-15 years. They are susceptible to eye and skin infections, cataracts, dry eyes or heart defects, but their primary health risk is teeth problems. Things like play sessions or a run around the house will give them enjoyment. They have a high degree of energy, which means they need fairly long walks each day to prevent hyperactivity.

You need to be willing to give them early training to prevent small dog syndrome if you choose to buy the Pomeranian. They are an excellent choice for families with older children, retirees or apartment dwellers, but not an ideal option for families with young children. This particular breed is appealing to a lot of dog owners, and one of the biggest reasons is that it has an adorable appearance and energy that is easy to fall in love with. One other quality that is appealing about them is despite their fluffy coat they are really quite easy to groom.
