The Siberian Husky is a dog breed that has many good qualities. They are beautiful dogs that along with their close relative, the Alaskan Malamute, closely resemble the wolf in appearance. They were created by the Chukchi people by selective breeding and were specifically bred to survive in the harsh, northern winters and pull heavy sleds for long distances over ice and snow.

People are drawn to their striking blue eyes and interesting markings. The Husky comes in many coat colors from multi-colored to shades of red and the most popular colors, black and white. Many of these dogs have white faces with colored fur around their eyes that makes them look like they are wearing masks. They are often described as a mysterious, intelligent looking breed which is probably one of the reasons why so many people are drawn to them.

These dogs are very intelligent, independent and are bursting with personality. They aren't generally known to be affectionate but do enjoy the company of other dogs and people. Don't expect a Husky to follow you around the house or lay in your lap. They want to be around you but these dogs are more comfortable at arm's length than in your face.

Some important traits that anyone thinking about getting a Siberian Husky needs to know are:

• They require at least weekly brushing because they do shed a lot.
• The Husky is generally not good with smaller animals because of their "chase and kill" instinct.
• These dogs are known as escape artists and can easily get out of crates and back yards if they aren't completely secure.
• They are terrific and persistent diggers.
• Huskies can be destructive to personal property inside and outside the home if they become bored because they are such a high energy breed.

Huskies are generally not a good breed for the first time dog owner. Since they are so intelligent, they can also be extremely hard to train. They are very pack oriented dogs and the pack hierarchy is extremely important to them. Generally new dog owners do not know how to establish themselves as the pack leader and this sets the relationship up for disaster if the dog maintains the number one spot. You have to be in position number one with the Husky or they will literally walk all over you.

Training a Siberian Husky is not something that is optional with this breed. They have to be trained in order to keep the dog from running the house and running all over anyone who lives with them. Their intelligence and stubbornness can get in the way but if you are an experienced dog owner who is up to the challenge, it can be an extremely rewarding experience.
