What Things Should You Know About The Havanese?
- 25/03/2013
The Havanese, also called the "Havana Silk Dog", is a toy breed of dog. They feature a curly non-shedding coat in many colours. It was during the 15th century the breed first appeared and providing companionship to Spanish sailors is the purpose they were initially used for. They're still popular as a companion dog for families or allergy sufferers in the modern day. They can be identified by their cheerful and eager-to-please nature. The breed is known to have been created in Cuba and their earlier ancestors are the now-extinct Blanquito de la Habana along with the Poodle and other Bichon types.
They're recognized as a small sized breed of dog. The recommended male and female measurements are 8.5-11.5 inches high with a weight of 7-13 pounds. They're recognized for their curious and affectionate disposition. They can be unsuitable as a protection dog, as along with their small size they are typically friendly towards strangers. The breed ranks quite highly in comparison to all other breeds when learning new commands, and are recognized as being very clever.
They are very suitable as a family pet, as they are playful and affectionate towards kids. Other animals such as dogs of a similar size that can become good playmates do live well with them. Taking care of their coat is a time consuming assignment. They demand full grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, and regular brushing every second day. They like having a small yard (but is actually happiest with their family) so they have plenty of space, but can be highly be suitable for apartment life.
As with many small sized dogs, they're predominantly long-lived and have a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most common health concern is patellar luxation or PRA, and they're also vulnerable to cataracts, hip dysplasia or dry skin. They love things like playing games or running around the house. To prevent the threat of bad behavior, they demand moderate walks every day as a result of their medium amount of energy.
You must be ready to give them a high amount of attention and plenty of mental challenges if you own the Havanese. They're perfect for families, apartment dwellers or allergy sufferers who'll give plenty of attention, but not the best choice for people who are not home often. This particular dog is pretty appealing to quite a few dog lovers, and one of the most important reasons why is it has an affectionate and playful nature which makes it a good family pet and companion.
