What Should You Know About The Japanese Chin?

  • 25/03/2013

The Japanese Chin, also called the Japanese Toy Spaniel, is classified under the toy dog breed class. They have a black or tan or red and white coat. The breed is assumed to have first originated in 6th century China and was gifted to Japan where companionship (contrary to the belief that dogs were working animals) was the reason they were first kept for. They are still a popular selection as a companion dog for gentle owners these days. They can be characterized by their cheerful temperament and attachment to their owners. They're assumed to have appeared in China and their earlier ancestors are relatives of the Pekingese and Tibetan Spaniel.

They're categorized as a tiny sized breed of dog. The recommended male and female guidelines are 8-11 inches tall and a weight of 4-7 pounds. Their manner is recognized as being sensitive, devoted and eager-to-please. They can be unsuitable as a guard dog, as along with their small size they are mostly reserved with strangers. The breed is identified as being fairly clever, but is ranked 62nd compared to all other dogs when learning new commands.

They're fairly suitable as a family pet, seeing as they are good towards children. They do combine peacefully with other animals like dogs and other pets. Taking care of their coat is an easy task. They demand a small amount of brushing of their coat once every few days, and full grooming every every so often. They like to have a small backyard that gives them room to run around, but can very easily be suited to apartment life.

They are largely long-lived, as is the case with the majority of tiny sized dog breeds, with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their main health issue is breathing problems or sensitivity to heat, and they are also vulnerable to eye problems, seasonal allergies and distemper. Things such as running around the yard or playing inside will give them great enjoyment. They have a moderate level of energy, which means they need short walks every day to reduce the likelihood of destructive behavior.

If you choose to buy the Japanese Chin you need to be ready to give them a high amount of companionship. They are a good choice for retirees, apartment dwellers or families with older children, but not an ideal option for families with young children. This particular dog is very appealing for quite a few dog owners, and one of the most important reasons why is the fact it makes a wonderful companion due to its cheerful nature and close attachment to their owner.
