What Causes Pomeranian Baldness?

  • 26/01/2014

Baldness is something that is not only present in humans. It is interesting to note that animals also experience baldness, especially those animals with fur like dogs. But what is baldness? Baldness, in general, is defined to be a loss of hair. It may occur in different parts of the body, but human beings experience baldness of the hair mostly found in the head. In animals, they tend to lose some parts of their body coverings. Although hair loss is common in dogs, there are times when it becomes abnormal. It will be detrimental for some animals like dogs to lose a large amount of its fur because this serves as a protection during extreme weather conditions.

A specific toy dog breed, the Pomeranian is known to have diseases that cause them to have severe hair loss. Pomeranians originated from Central Europe. This hair loss is also known as Alopecia or Black Skin Disease. It is called Black Skin Disease because the skin of the dog turns black and then the onset of the hair loss. It can also be called Pomeranian baldness. Alopecia is a disorder that is known but there aren't enough details. The initial signs are manifested through the loss of primary hairs around the tail and the neck. Eventually, the hair surrounding the stated regions will be lost and the legs and the head are the remaining parts of the body with hair. This disease can be caused by primary follicular defect and it is similar to the male pattern baldness in human beings. It is also possible that parasites like ticks cause the loss of hair in Pomeranians, as a result of lack of proper care and hygiene for the dogs. Some additional factors like environmental toxins, hormonal imbalances, stress and nutrition are also thought to trigger the disease.

Even though there is a high possibility of Pomeranians to acquire this disease, there are still ways to be able to prevent it. One way to prevent this disease is to make sure that the Pomeranian is well taken cared of. The owners of the dogs should have regular baths and the veterinarian should be paid a visit regularly. They are the ones who are more knowledgeable about the conditions of the dogs and their advice will really matter. Pet owners who have Pomeranian dogs with Pomeranian baldness should not lose hope because there are still solutions to their problems; veterinarians are always there when help is sought.
