What Are the Health Problems in West Highland White Terriers Or Westies
- 26/11/2010
As in life for us humans, we can live a fairly health life if we take reasonable care with ourselves. Get the required amount of exercise and eat healthy overall. I say this because we all like to indulge at times and I also think this is important.
Therefore for our beautiful Westies; whether it be west highland terrier puppies or dogs; they should live long and healthy lives provided that we give them proper care. This also include the normal veterinary checks plus other attention as and when required.
However, just as us humans can and do, our westies can fall victim to health problems such as allergies to more serious issue such as cancer. Some of these can result from an hereditary basis and one of the common health problems is allergies allied to resultant skin problems.
These skin problems are probably caused by an reaction to something in the environment, such fleas, dust, grass, food or even chemicals that cause the westie to itch. Itching in turn Causes the dog to scratch. This in turn causes a major problem, because with constant scratching, the skin will brake down and there will be a resultant bacterial infection.
This type of infection should be treated by your Veterinarian with antibiotics. They can probably identify another reason for the itching such as changing your dogs food. It is important to boost the immune system and control the itching. By doing this you will allow the skin to heal.
Some more of the common problems found in the Westie are:
Westie Lung Disease
White Shakers Syndrome
The grooming and dental care are also important health checks that you should take into account when reviewing the Westies health. After all this beautiful white westie is part of your family. Would you do anything less?
