What About a Chihuahua?

  • 18/06/2013

If you're looking for a small dog with a huge personality, look no further. This puppy packs a punch in the personality stakes. They may not be the biggest dog but this doesn't hold them back at all. When most people think of Chihuahua they think of yappy and whiny dogs that can at times be unpredictable. This stereotyped behavior is behavior that can be displayed in any dog or breed if they're not socialized correctly and neglected. I can't stress how important it is to allow your Chihuahua or any dog for that matter learn to communicate with other dogs from an early age.

The chihuahua is one of the smallest of dog breeds at an average weight of 4 pounds and height of only 7 inches. It is also a breed that is long lived, with an average lifespan of around 18 years, if you consider most breeds live to anywhere between 8 and 13 years this is quite a long life.

The Chihuahua is a very hardy breed especially when you consider their life expectancy, although as with all breeds of dogs they do have a propensity towards certain health problems. If you are considering adopting or purchasing a Chihuahua you should consider looking further into patella dislocation which is not uncommon in the breed and also low blood sugar issues.

Chihuahua mothers have litters of 2 to 3 pups and their litters can be different colored or even have a combination of short and long haired puppies. When the puppies are born they are born with a soft spot on the top of their heads very similar to the one human babies have called a molera. This spot as it does in humans hardens up in time. It is important to know that the pups are very vulnerable because of this and extra caution should be taken to avoid this area of the pups body especially around smaller children.

There is much speculation of the origins of the Chihuahua some say it bears close resemblance to a breed in Asia although there isn't substantial enough evidence supporting this claim. The Chihuahua was discovered in Mexico in the 19th century and is now recognized as a Mexican breed.

Owning a Chihuahua is an absolute joy they're very loving and loyal and are easily trained. As is the case with all dogs though it is very important that your Chihuahua gets regular exercise and interaction with people and other dogs. Yes Chihuahuas do not require a lot of space to exercise but exercise in your home is no substitute for a morning or evening walk where your pooch can meet other people and other dogs.
