Weimaraner - Pros and Cons of Owning This Versatile Pet
- 13/05/2019
The Weimaraner is also known as the Grey Ghost due to their predominant colouring. They are a fairly large dog with tons of energy. They are working dogs and will take on just about any task from hunting to herding to watching the children. They do have a few unfavourable traits but I believe the good ones far outweigh the bad ones.
Pros:
The Weimaraner is an intelligent and affectionate pet that loves to be part of the family. It is a dog that learns quickly and will show a profound interest in understanding what you are trying to teach it. This high level of intelligence along with their versatility is why many pet owners choose this breed. Most owners will tell you that their Grey Ghost is almost human because its intelligence is that high.
Your pet Weimaraner is the type of pet that will catch people's attention. Their colouring and actions make them stand out from the ordinary dog. The breed may be a surprise to you if you have never seen one or even heard of them. When talking to an owner of one you will most likely hear stories that make them seem like some kind of super dog. In many ways that is just what they are in many peoples opinion.
The dog has sharp instincts and a lot of stamina that make it a good choice for a hunting dog. If you are a hunter and are looking for a companion as well, this could be the perfect hunting dog, pet and best friend. Before choosing any hunting dog you should learn more about the Weimaraner. I think you will be happy you did.
Cons:
A Weimaraner has a high level of scent and therefore will be attracted to anything that you may have left out or items within your garbage can. For this reason, you often will find that your dog has gotten into your garbage can and leaving you with a big mess.
The Grey Ghost's intelligence is somewhat of a catch 22. It can easily learn to open up doors and escape when placed into a room within your home. It is very important that you keep track of your pet when locking them up either inside or outside the home as you never know when it might escape. The ideal environment for your pet will be a large secure yard so they can get plenty of exercise.
Another problem is that this pet loves and longs to be near its owner at all times. For this reason, you may find that your dog will not be happy if left alone for long periods of time and could become destructive. The Weimaraner is not a house dog although they are content to be indoors as long as someone is with them. If this is your only pet and you plan to leave it alone much of the time you may be happier with another breed with a little less energy and need for companionship.
Due to the strong hunting instincts of the Weimaraner you need to watch them around non-canine pets such as hamsters, rabbits and the like. They do get along with humans and other dogs though.
All in all a Weimaraner makes an ideal pet for an active family or one that get outdoors a lot. Having a hunter in the family is a plus as this breed is one of the better hunting dogs. If you are looking for an intelligent and loyal pet as well take a good look at the Grey Ghost.
