  • 20/11/2010

Being one of the tallest breeds known in the world the Irish Wolfhound actually received its name not for the pony-comparison size it reaches, but because this breed often works as a wolf hunter. This is one of the oldest breeds known to man dating back as far as approximately 400 AD. Irish Wolfhounds have been used in several wars, herding animals and protecting its owners from several dangers such as deer, elk, wolves and boar. These often fought over breeds were actually given as gifts to royalty.

Irish Wolfhounds are known for their patience. They are very intelligent, loyal breeds and are excellent with children. However; as loyal as they are, do not expect them to be good watch dogs. They more often than not never seem to meet a stranger. This breed befriends most everyone on the first meet. So here are some guidelines to help you train your new best friend:

The primary thing that a successful animal trainer must do is win the confidence and trust of the animal to be trained. This phase is remarkably critical when schooling a dog. If a dog cannot distinguish a pack leader, then he accepts the position as leader.

By assuming the role of pack leader, you are making it simple for the dog to know how he should act. If you try to skip this step, it will be close to impossible to train your dog. Loyalty is something that you silently require through frequent, constant and evenhanded interaction with your dog. When your dog really respects you, he knows that his responsibility is to go along with your command, and he will choose to do it effortlessly.

The way you exhibit affection to a dog can make a significant difference in gaining his respect and trust. Being loving to your dog can either help building loyalty or it can weaken it. While a puppy is an lively force with which to be reckoned, it is valuable to establish some expectations early on to take on respectable habits. It is imperative, nonetheless, to set boundaries, and to institute acceptable and undesirable behaviors.

A world that has constancy in its foundation helps a dog realize what is anticipated of him. Given that dogs are pack animals, they genuinely respond favorably to this setting.

Good luck training your new Irish Wolfhound puppy!
