Training a Border Collie
- 26/01/2014
Border Collies are one of the world's best herding dogs. They excel at herding sheep but may also be used with cattle. In Australia they are often cross-bred with the Queensland Blue Heeler dog to produce a highly effective working breed for herding cattle.
These dogs are highly intelligent and energetic. If you are thinking about training one do not even hesitate. Start training your dog as early as possible, preferably as a puppy when they are more responsive to dog training.
Due to their high intelligence and abundance of energy this breed needs both mental stimulation and lots of physical exercise.
It is important as a dog owner to realise that your dog needs a minimum of two hours exercise each and every day. In addition to on-leash walking your dog needs some of this exercise time off the leash running freely playing catch or fetching games. It is also ideal to provide agility training for your Border Collie, your dog will love this and it can form part of its exercise.
If you live in suburbia it is important to make sure your dog gets this exercise each and every day, rain hail or shine. It does not matter to your dog whether there is good weather or not. If you are not careful about letting your Border Collie get enough exercise you will see difficult behaviors crop up. Regular daily exercise also helps you train your dog more easily. Training a Border Collie is difficult if your dog is over-stimulated and lacking exercise. According to dogacademy.org, it is also ideal to provide agility training for your Border Collie; your dog will love this and it can form part of its exercise.
Certain toys are ideal for your Border Collie. The kong toy is brilliant because the hidden treat occupies your dog and provides a challenge. As a puppy it is important to provide your dog with chew toys, especially when your puppy is teething and tempted to destroy your furniture, carpet, shoes or anything else of value in your home. A variety of chew toys provide entertainment as well. Similarly a good puncture-proof ball is ideal for your dog because it provides both entertainment and exercise.
When you are training your dog it helps to have all these other aspects in place to make your dog training easier. Even if your dog is reasonably well behaved it is helpful to spend ten minutes a day training it because your Border Collie will love trying to please you and you can build on the good training you have previously done.
Border Collies are a loyal breed and a wonderful family dog. If you put the time into training your puppy the end result is a happy dog and a happy dog owner.
