Tips on How to Walk a Husky

  • 01/10/2011

Here in this article I have outlined a few tips to show you how to walk a Husky without hurting yourself or the dog. If you don't know how to walk a Husky properly you will not enjoy the walk and neither will the dog. A Siberian Husky is a very strong animal and since it was bred to pull sleighs it could easily pull you all over the place if your not careful. So please read these tips below to help improve your technique and so you both can enjoy walking more.

Tip number one: Before walking your Husky you should make sure he is in a calm state of mind i.e. not excited and jumping all over the place. Get the dog to sit first to help get him calm.

Tip number two: Make sure that you are using a harness to walk your Husky and not a leash attached to its collar. If the dog pulls it will have a choking effect which makes the dog enjoy its walk less and pull more, it can also frighten the dog. The harness is more comfortable for the dog and it is easier to use.

Tip number three:Make sure the harness fits your dog properly and comfortably otherwise your Husky will not enjoy the walk and he could get out of it. If he escapes from it he may never come back.

Tip number four: When you are walking with your dog you should be walking in front of him and always keep the dog by your side or behind you preferably, never in front of you. Always leave your house before the dog when you take it for a walk as well, its a good show of leadership.

Tip number five: Use a shorter lead to walk your dog. By shortening the lead you will have more control over the dog.

Tip number six: Be relaxed and walk with your head up.

Tip number seven: If your Husky starts to pull stop the walk until he calms down and keep doing that every time he pulls, eventually he will realise that if he is calm he will get to walk.

Tip number eight: If he starts to pull or get distracted tug the leash to break concentration and correct him.

By following the above how to walk a Husky tips you will be able to walk your dog properly and you both will be able to enjoy walking without injury. It is not recommended that you let your Husky of leash as they will not likely come back.

I have a 15 week old puppy who is not bad on walks but does tend to want to go ahead of me when walking. My question is this, if a husky is a sled pulling dog will its instincts not always tell it to be in front? Also is it not better to use a neck collar rather than a harness as a neck collar will have more of a chance of stopping pulling on the leash?
