Tibetan Terriers Are Good-Natured, Playful and Curious Companions - That Look Like a Cartoon

  • 26/11/2010

Tibetan Terriers look like that sheep dog on the old Warner Brothers cartoons that was always getting the best of the old wolf.

Seriously.

'Cept, of course, they don't stand upright or punch a time clock. At least I have never seen one do so. You never know.

But like the ol' cartoon dog, these are good-natured, playful and curious companions that do well in the city, subs or the country. They are extremely intelligent (which means they will probably NEVER have to punch a time clock;-) ) and enjoy older children and most other animals.

They have a nice solid "big dog" bark and use it on strangers.

Appearance

Other than the cartoon dog resemblance, they stand about 14 to 17 inches tall typically and can weigh from 18 up to 30 pounds.

Their coat is usually long -- often touching the ground on the sides -- and can be any doggie color, solid or solid with white high-lights.

Grooming and Exercise

They really need to be brushed everyday -- which is a job! -- and need plenty of exercise to stay healthy. Several brisk walks a day are not too much for a Tibetan Terrier.

Origins

The Tibetan Terrier, as the name would imply, originated in Tibet about 2000 years ago. It was kept by Buddhist monks for companionship in the rugged mountain areas.

Tibetan Terriers were given by the monks to visitors as a gift of good luck.

One last thing -- don't tell them -- but the Tibetan Terrier is not really a Terrier.
