  • 18/01/2011

Breed Description
The Tibetan Spaniel is a well-proportioned breed that is usually 10 inches in height at the shoulder. These small and intelligent dogs have an alert disposition and usually weigh around 9-15 pounds.

Coat
The Tibetan Spaniel is a double-coated breed with a smooth fur on his legs and face. The mid-length coat of this breed lays flat on the skin with a feathering on ears, back of front legs, bottom, and tail. They usually come in fawn, cream, gold, black, white, black and tan, shaded, and patched in solid, or combination of colors with white markings on their feet.

Activity
The playful Tibetan Spaniel loves to explore the outdoors with family. This sturdy and athletic dog is always eager to take on any adventure, from walking around the block to romping on the beach, or the park. They enjoy playing and will gladly play with anyone who is willing to. Having this breed socialized is important as it is usually aloof around strangers.

Temperament
Generally, the Tibetan Spaniels are assertive dogs with happy disposition. They are highly intelligent dogs that are naturally aloof with strangers. Some are known to make great family pets, families with small children included. These dogs love attention and the feeling of belongingness with their masters, but can equally have the tendency to be independent and willful at times. They are wary of strangers and will be willing to warn if new situation arises.

Overview
The intelligent, vivacious, and alert Tibetan Spaniel has been popular in Tibetan monasteries of centuries. They were previously named Gyakhi, the pet and watchdog of monasteries. A small and charming breed, it has been valued in households of the common folks as travel companions and skilled watchdogs.

Care
The Tibetan Spaniel is a moderate shedder that goes through a heavy seasonal shedding. This breed will only require occasional combing with metal comb and brushing with pin brush. But, during the seasonal shed, extra attention should be given on a daily basis.

Training
The Tibetan Spaniel should begin general obedience training at an early age. They are not known to be highly trainable as they have a willful nature. But, that doesn't mean they cannot be trained. In fact, they make great family pets and can even possibly be housetrained easily. Since they are not naturally aggressive, they will not require training as much as some large breeds. This breed rarely bites, and is friendly and playful by nature. Due to the challenge training poses for these spaniels, it is best if they are trained by someone experienced with Tibetan Spaniel training.

Character
Kept by Buddhists in the Tibetan monasteries, the Tibetan Spaniel has been originally trained to be a watchdog, and to turn the prayer wheel. They primarily sat on monastery walls to give caution to monks of any approaching wolves or strangers. These dogs generally have a happy disposition, and will make great family pets.
