The Tall, But Gentle Irish Wolfhound
- 20/11/2010
The Irish flag has something to be proud of for having the world's tallest breed of dog under its reign. Its origin in Ireland may be traced from the arrival of Romans somewhere in the 200 BC. Because of its size, this canine breed was used as a good companion in hunting, in fighting, and in securing posts or territories. They were even used to hunt wolves during those times, thus the name wolfhound.
You must think twice if you are up to the challenge of taking care of this kind of breed. The wolfhound is not just any ordinary cute dog. One must double his efforts in managing to breed wolfhounds. Its weight can reach 50 to 70 kilograms or 100 to 150 pounds! Its length may vary between 35 to 38 inches, meaning it is around three to three and a half feet!
The wolfhound, aside from its big form, still has many characteristics which may endear its master. However, these same characteristics are the same ones that must be considered by those trainers who have frail bodies. These dogs have big-sized paws and prominent shoulders that make them great for hunting. They are also fast and have high stamina - two great characteristics for a pet, but can prove to be physically draining to the master, too.
Aside from being physically prepared, an owner of the Irish wolfhound must also be strong emotionally. These dogs only last from 5 to 10 years and rarely do some achieve the 10th to the 12th year. With this in mind, the owners must cherish the graceful and gentle nature of the wolfhound and treat them well as true companions and friends.
