The Irish Coated Wheaten Terrier

  • 01/10/2011

The Irish coated wheaten terrier, more typically known as the soft coated wheaten terrier, is an absolutely terrific dog. The name of this breed is at times misspelled as "Wheaten terrier" but the appropriate spelling is "wheaten terrier". I own a female, named Molly, and she is easily one of the best dogs I have ever known. And so, I hope you will understand as I tailor my comments about this particular breed based on my own practical experience with her.

Molly is an affectionate dog. However, I would go even further than that and say that she almost craves attention. I have discovered from other wheaten terrier owners that it could almost be said that dogs of this breed exhibit an emotionally needy personality when it comes to their desire for attention and affection. I recognise that is a broad statement that might not apply to all wheaten terriers, but it apparently is prevalent enough that some owners have recognised it. I certainly have with Molly, and I consider it to be one of her endearing qualities.

This breed of dog is usually very intelligent, and that also certainly is true of Molly. She was initially obtained from a dog pound (if you can believe that anyone would ever abandon such a terrific dog), and when she was being considered for adoption, she seemed to understand what was happening, and she put on quite a show for her prospective family! She demonstrated how she could sit, and shake hands, and just put on all of the endearing expressions and behaviours that she possibly could. Later on, when she was in a short obedience school class, she effortlessly ranked at the top of the class. She always seemed to know what the instructor wanted, and really strutted her stuff!

Wheaten terriers are also good as family pets, because they are especially good with children. I have never seen a child that Molly does not like. When there is a child in the room, she gets all excited and shakes her little stub of a tail so hard that her whole hind end is waving back and forth. She is very loyal and protective of her family members, and has never shown any kind of threatening behaviour in the slightest. I would not hesitate to recommend a dog of this breed to any family with children.

The only downside that I can think of to owning a dog like Molly is the thought that she is going to get old someday, and eventually would have to be put to sleep. Hopefully, that is at least ten years in the future, barring any unforeseen circumstances, but it is still a thought that clouds my consciousness from time to time. I honestly don't know how I will handle it if and when that time comes. I am certain that many dog owners can empathise with what I am saying here, but it certainly is difficult to think about. But on the bright side, it is just another indicator of how great the soft coated wheaten terrier is as a family pet.
