The Dogue De Bordeaux Has the Biggest Head You Have Ever Seen on a Dog, But It's a Sweetie
- 02/11/2010
The little known breed, the Dogue de Bordeaux, has the biggest head you have ever seen on a dog -- or any other animal for that matter. It's actually quite funny looking. It reminds me of my grade school principal who had a head that, as my friend Scott says, "went clear down to his naval." But that's just me. Your mileage may vary.
Back to the Dogue de Bordeaux (or Bordeaux Mastiff). They have a deep and intimidating bark that is good for scaring off intruders. In fact they make excellent guard dogs who protect their territory with vigilance and courage -- but usually without aggression.
This breed is very, very loyal to they owner. They are affectionate and loving with children but don't take very well to unfamiliar dogs and can actually become aggressive. If they are socialized early, they do get along well with other dogs and other animals -- including cats.
Some of them are heavy droolers. They are Mastiffs, after all.
Appearance of the Dogue de Bordeaux
Well, you already know about the main feature -- that massive head. Let me also say that it is lined with symmetrical wrinkles falling down on each side of the broad and powerful muzzle. The ears are large and floppy and sit high up on the skull.
The coat is typically a reddish brown or golden in color, short and soft to the touch.
They stand 23 to 27 inches tall and can weigh 80 to 100 pounds. The head alone probably weighs 50. Okay, I'll stop.
Grooming and Exercise Needs
The Dogue de Bordeaux only need occasional brushing of their short coat.
As with most large dogs, they only require moderate exercise daily.
A healthy and happy Doque can expect to live 10 - 12 years.
Origins of the Dogue de Bordeaux
The Bordeaux Mastiff originated in ancient times in what would become France and was trained to attack bulls, bears and other dogs.
Today it is used primarily as a guard dog and companion. Although quite intimidating looking, they have a calm demeanor.
