Staffy Puppy Training Tips

  • 18/06/2013

If you have recently gotten a staffy, you will want to invest some time into proper staffy puppy training. Staffordshire bull terriers are fast becoming a popular breed of dog both in the UK and US. These dogs are exceptionally smart, people friendly, and full of energy. With proper training, your puppy can grow into a well-behaved, respectable pet.

Owning a staffy pup will require patience simply because this dog breed is so intelligent, you will have to exercise a measure of patience in training your puppy. Consistent training is key with most any dog as you will want to dedicate your time and efforts into proper positive reinforcement training.

From the moment you bring your new pup home, you will want to begin training. The first lesson will be for the safety of the dog, and includes the basic lesson of sit and stay. Try to firmly establish yourself as the pack leader with your puppy so that it does not become overly disobedient. When your staffy starts to follow your commands and displays the desired behaviors, quickly praise or reward him with a treat. Alternating between treats and praise is a smart way to start reinforcing good behavior.

Another important step in your puppy's development is to social him with other people and animals while he is still young. It is critical for your pup to get familiar with his environment so that there will be a measure of predictability. If you don't take this necessary step with your staffy, you may find that he becomes fearfully aggressive, and this is a behavior that you will want to avoid. Dogs thrive on routine, and you will find yourself dealing with fewer behavioral problems as a result of this socialization process.

Keeping your dog healthy and on a regular schedule is another important part of staffy puppy training. Dogs thrive on regular routines. Be sure to feed, walk, and send him off to sleep at relatively the same time every day. In addition, daily exercise is critical to your pet's health. Making sure that your puppy gets regular exercise on a daily basis is excellent for his health and fitness levels. You want your pet to be fit and strong, as without proper exercise your puppy can become depressed and disobedient. They may begin to display unwanted behaviors like excessive chewing, or relieving themself in the house.

Taking the extra time every day to properly train your staffy will be very rewarding for both you and your new puppy.
