- 18/01/2011
Breed Description
The Spinone Italiano is a large sized breed that is sturdily built. This breed usually weighs around 75-85 pounds for males, and 60-75 pounds for females. The height of this breed ranges between 23-27 inches for males, and reaches 22-25 inches for females.
Coat
The coat of the Spinone Italiano is tough, a little wiry, and closely fitting. This breed is a single-coated breed with a long, soft, and silky consistency. They usually come in white, orange roan, orange and white, chestnut and white, and chestnut roan.
Activity
The Spinone Italiano is an active breed that enjoys roaming around as often as possible. This breed is a hunting dog that is skilled in pointing, hunting, and retrieving if trained. These versatile dogs can also provide a perfect companionship with those who need assistance. It is a good idea to plan an outdoor activity routine for approximately an hour every day. This will release their pent up energy and keep them fit as well.
Temperament
The Spinone Italiano is generally loyal, responsive, and gentle. These dogs are playful and enthusiastic, but not a highly adaptable breed, so expect that they would react negatively if faced with a new situation. Can be stubborn at times, this breed is wary of strangers but not yappy. This breed is generally well-mannered, and humble around its master.
Overview
Also known as "Spinoso" in other areas, the Spinone Italiano is named after a thorn bush called pino, the favorite hiding place for small games. This bush is virtually impossible to penetrate, and only thick-skinned small animals like this breed, could force through their branches unharmed.
Care
The Spinone Italiano requires moderate grooming. They will only require weekly brushing, and clipping every couple of months. Show dogs, however, will need coat stripping every few months.
Training
The Spinone Italiano is a highly intelligent breed that quickly learns new things and tasks. But, this will equally be a hindrance to training as they are known to resist completing a task if they feel it unnecessary. Positive reinforcement and reward system for this breed is a required method of training. These highly sensitive dogs can get hurt if handled in a punitive manner. These enthusiastic and intelligent breed will love learning new tasks. Remember, they require being told that they are doing great while they are doing well, and gently correcting when not.
Character
The Spinone Italiano is a skilled hunting dog. The tracking abilities of this breed are keen, and their gentle mouth retrieving games unspoiled. This breed has a terrific character and are generally gentle who are very willing to please. They are considered to be less of a hound than a pointer, and are not whiny, bossy, or yappy.
