The Afghan Hound is said to probably be one of the oldest dog breeds. Recent discoveries made by researchers of ancient DNA are supporting the idea that the Afghan Hound is in fact older than the pre-Christian era, dating back for many thousands of years. The breed was used to hunt wolves, foxes and gazelles in the cold mountains of Afghanistan where it acquired its unique features.
You can distinguish the Afghan Hound by the thick,fine, silky coat. And, the rind curl at the end of its tail is another characteristic. Standing up to 29 inches, the Afghan Hound is a tall breed. While the coat of the Afghan Hound can be any color, there white spots that are discouraged mostly on the head. The characteristics of the breed include the high hipbones.
The Afghan Hound breed is a very sweet, loyal and affectionate one. They are a very noble and courageous breed but they also are sensitive and should be treated in consequence. If you have other animals around, the Afghan Hound will be ok with them as far as he is socialized with them. Also, they are good companions for older children.
You'll need to be careful with the coat of this breed, they will require a bath once a week to keep the coat from matting. Also, brushing the coat can damage it and special grooming tools are required.
If you are interested about owning an Afghan Hound you should read as much as you can about the breed and the requirements you need to provide for the care, training and the daily activity the dog has to do. The Afghan Hound is a beautiful breed to own, they are usually common participants at dog shows and they will make you proud, at a show or on the street while you take them for a walk.
