Pomeranian Care Tips

  • 22/02/2013

Inviting a new puppy into the home is an exciting time, especially when it is a Pomeranian. They are full of spunk and fluff, and are one of the most beloved breeds. Pomeranians require much of the same type of care as other dogs, but there are a few aspects of their care that ought to be noted prior to ownership.

Like many breeds, Pomeranians need significant physical activity. They are a high energy breed, and love to play. Chasing a flash light's beam around a room is a fun indoor activity for small dogs. Outdoor activities like walks or trips to the dog park are also fun.

One of the characteristics that many people especially love about Pomeranians is their super fluffy coat. This dog breed actually has two coats of fur - an undercoat and a top coat. Brushing their fur out means getting both layers completely brushed. This will prevent matting, and is easiest when done three times per week. Paying special attention to brush their coat their coat extra well during the change of seasons, from cold to warm, also reduces shedding.

Just like brushing their hair is important, so is brushing their teeth. Buying a soft-bristled child's tooth brush is fine, but only dog-specific toothpaste should be used. Beginning a tooth brushing routine as soon as the puppy can leave their mother's side, helps them become accustomed to having their teeth brushed, and they will be less likely to fight it. Also, feeding them dog treats specifically designed to reduce doggie plaque is another way to maintain a Pomeranian's oral health.

While brushing their teeth only needs to be done weekly, owners might find they need to clean up a Pomeranian's weepy eyes more frequently. A slightly damp cotton ball or swab makes this job easier. Simply take the damp ball and gently wipe it over the dog's eyes. Daily maintenance of the dog's eyes will prevent the eye goop from crusting, which would make cleaning the face more difficult. An owner can also use a fresh, damp cotton ball for wiping out their ears as needed.

Trimming a Pomeranian's nails is an acquired skill. Some people are comfortable doing this at home, and it saves them time and money. However, some owners do not find the savings worth the risk of clipping them too short and prefer to let professional dog groomers handle this task. The Pomeranian is a very portable dog and it is not difficult to take them into a groomer to have their nails clipped once or twice a month.

Another important aspect of caring for a Pomeranian is learning about the special health needs of this breed. While usually very healthy, their small size does lead to an increased incidence of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. A Pomeranian's metabolism is quite fast and when combined with their tiny stomach, it can be hard to maintain their blood sugar levels. The symptoms of low blood sugar in dogs includes lethargy, disorientation, weakness, or seizures. When these symptoms are observed, it is necessary to give the Pomeranian some sugar, usually in the form of Karo syrup or Nutri Cal, a high calorie nutritional supplement designed specifically for puppies.

Other health issues to watch out for with this breed include distichias and entropian, which are problems with the Pomeranian's eyelashes; patellar luxation, a slippery knee-cap; and tracheal collapse, which results in breathing issues. To take the best care of a Pomeranian and prevent these common health problems, feed them a diet free of fillers. Choose a dog food that is mostly meat and has high levels of DHA, Omega 6, and Omega 3. Supplements are not needed if they have a high quality diet, but some Pomeranians might need glucosamine supplements.

Caring for a Pomeranian is rewarding work. A well-cared for dog is a happy dog and will bring its owner many wonderful days of play and love.
