Breed Description
Often called English Pointer, the Pointer is among the several pointing breeds developed as a gun dog. This breed is graceful and athletic. At first glance, they are usually described as a hard-driving compact alert breed. The size of the female is 23-26 inches tall, and weighs 45-65 pounds. The males are larger and heavier, standing at around 25-28 inches tall, and weigh around 55-75 pounds.
Coat
The short-coated Pointer has a dense and smooth to touch coat. The coat of this breed has a natural sheen, and standard colors include liver, black, lemon, and orange.
Activity
As gun dogs, Pointers are tireless and energetic dogs that require a great deal of exercise daily. This breed requires a couple of walks daily, or they can walk alongside a bicycle. This breed has to spend pent up energy to avoid destructive behaviors.
Temperament
The Pointer is more popular as working breed than a household pet. These affectionate, friendly and obedient dogs get along well with household pets and other dogs once introduced during puppyhood. This breed is generally patient and loving towards children, and loves to be included in family activities. They thrive on human interaction and will very much go along with any household situation. Due to the friendliness of this breed, they do not make ideal guard dogs. They gladly greet and welcome everyone, yet bark at someone that approaches the door.
Overview
The Pointer is a highly active breed with active hunting instinct. When they reach around two months, these dogs will generally start pointing at any scent that interests them.
Care
The low-maintenance Pointer has a short coat that requires not that much grooming. Their coat sheds dirt, so bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary. There will be seasonal molting for this breed, and brushing with rubber mitt will get rid most of the dead hair. This breed has dropped ears that should be cleaned and checked regularly for ear infections.
Training
The Pointer is among the few hunting dogs that are skilled in almost all gun dog talents. In fact, they make great retriever, pointer, scent hounds, and both water and upland bird dog. This breed will require formal training including puppy classes, agility, obedience, and other training courses. If left untrained, this breed will be manageable due to their boredom. This means training should revolve around having them earn and work for everything. Before they are allowed to play, go outside, and go for walks, they should be able to perform a command. This can be the simple sit or down, for as long as they work for that they are getting. This will allow them to realize that they are not the pack leader, and they are not in charge.
Character
The Pointer is a tireless breed with limitless energy. This breed is loyal, devoted, and are constantly tolerant of children. These intelligent and affectionate dogs are placid at home, while maintaining their enthusiasm during work and play.
