Breed Description
Bred to trail hares, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a breed of dog originating in Vendeen, a district of France. Both male and female are of similar size, ranging between 12.5-15.5 inches tall at the withers, and weighs around 25-40 pounds. These solid dogs appear unrefined and shaggy yet remaining casual.
Coat
The smallest among the four rough-coated hounds that originated in Vendee, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has a long and rough textured outer coat, and a dense and harsh textured under coat. The coat colors of this breed come in white, along with patches of color including lemon, grizzle, orange, black, and tri-colored.
Activity
The highly energetic Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen requires vigorous exercise outdoors in a daily basis. They love being included in family activities, and will enjoy having family play sessions. It is important to take note that this breed is a scent hound. Meaning, they should never be allowed to let off the leash/lead while jogging or walking. Yards should be securely fenced, and they should be monitored as they are known to be great escape artists, and have the fascination of digging. They will also do well in an apartment dwelling provided that they are exercised.
Temperament
The lively and active Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen constantly seeks for attention. They have a happy disposition that always spreads around their home. These playful breed is extrovert and curious. They can be quite mischievous, and generally loves the company of humans. In fact, they are even accepting of strangers, almost all the time. They particularly love to bark, making them excellent alarm dogs, but may be too congenial to be a guard dog.
Overview
The literal French translation of the name Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is: Petit - small; Basset - low to the ground; Griffon - wire or rough-coated; Vendeen - area of France where he came from. This breed is a scent hound, with a bold and alert personality.
Care
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen requires regular brushing to avoid tangles and matting. They should be stripped to keep their coats well-groomed. Hairs should be pulled using the finger and thumb or a special stripping tool. The coat of this breed is shallow, so this grooming method will not cause pain. They would require regular ear cleaning to prevent ear infection, and clipping of claws is needed once or twice monthly.
Training
An adorable and affectionate breed, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen will be eager to please once they get the idea that the owner is the boss. This vivacious, independent and robust dog is spirited and would fit with a dedicated dog owner. Training this breed can be tricky as they can easily be distracted. Firm and consistent training should start early on, and be maintained throughout their life.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is generally independent, enthusiastic, and affectionate. These outgoing and lively breed particularly loves being active. These fun-loving dogs are eager to please, and will get along well with almost everyone.
