Breed Description

The small-to-medium size Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a herding dog with sturdy build and short stature. They typically weigh between 22-26 pounds, and stands around 10-12 inches tall at the withers. Females commonly measure between 10-12 inches in height at the withers, and weighs around 22-24 pounds.

Coat

The coat of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is double coated. Their top coat is medium-length, thick and coarse in texture, while their inner coat is short and weather resistant. The coat colors can be seen in sable, fawn, red, black and tan, and may also come with white markings on the neck, chest, and legs.

Activity

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi requires ample amount of exercise. Though they have short legs, they love being active. Their relatively adaptable exercise needs will fit with the regular family life. With herding instinct, this breed loves having constant activities. They are also known to nip at the heels if they feel that their family plays too rowdy. These dogs are noted to be highly susceptible to back and joint problems. They should therefore be monitored if a lot of climbing is involved in their activities.

Temperament

These active, intelligent dependable breed is relatively easy to train. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is appropriate for both experienced and inexperienced dog owners, and will make great family pet and companion. These alert dogs will bark to raise an alarm if anything seems to be atypical for them. Owners should be warned that they tend to bark excessively. The herding origin of this breed is reflected as they will try to herd people and other animals, often caught nipping at the heels. This is something that should be corrected. They thrive on love and companionship, and will not be suitable for those dog owners that will have little time for this dedicated pet.
