Parson Russell Terriers - Tips For Grooming Your Parson Or Jack Russell Terrier
- 23/11/2010
Jack Russell or Parson terriers are happiest when they are playing in mud and fortunately mud usually dries and falls out by itself. But all Jack Russell or Parson terriers will feel and look better if their coat is groomed. Usually a quick brush with a bristle brush will loosen any dirt and restore a shine to their coat.
If your dog is usually indoors, then also he will be shedding a lot of hair in spring, which can be a nuisance if not brushed out, preferably daily.
It is easier to groom your dog on a raised surface covered with a blanket, which can be shaken clean afterward. Dead hairs may need to be plucked out and if this is the case, do not bath the dog before the process, as this would make the hair too slippery.
If your dog is not a show dog, then clipping is an option. This will not remove dead hairs but cutting them short means they will eventually fall out.
If you have groomed your Jack Russell or Parson terrier from when he was a puppy, he will be relatively relaxed during the grooming process, however if he shows anxiety, then it would be better to have him groomed professionally.
When your dog needs bathing be sure to use a dog shampoo as dog skin has a PH of 7.5 while the shampoo for a human skin with a PH of 5.5 would cause irritation. There are special shampoos for puppies that require no water or rinsing.
If you use your own tub instead of a special dog bath, place a non-skid mat in the bottom to prevent slipping. Wet the dog first, then mix the shampoo with the water and apply with a big sponge. Be sure to rinse well and towel vigorously which will help to dislodge any dead hairs. Combing when the hair is almost dry will complete the process.
Finally, grooming your Jack Russell or Parson Terrier should be an enjoyable time for you both.
