UK Police Seize Thousands Of 'Dangerous Dogs' Amid Calls For Reform

  • 13/04/2016
American-pitbull.jpgPolice have seized nearly 5,000 dogs suspected of being banned breeds from owners in England and Wales in the past three years, according to reports.

The RSPCA is reportedly calling for the Dangerous Dogs Act (United Kingdom) to be amended due to concerns that it is too wide in its scope.

The animal welfare charity is said to want new laws that ban dogs based on their behaviour, rather than their breed.

Pitbull terriers, Argentine mastiffs and Japanese tosas are among some of the breeds banned under the 1991 Act.

The BBC reported the figures after it emerged the Metropolitan Police are preparing to put down 300 illegal dogs seized from their owners in 2016.

Patrick O'Hara, the SDU's inspector, defended the decision by pointing out that many of the dogs scheduled to be put down are not "healthy or safe dogs to have around people".

He told Sky News: "What I can say is we have rehomed around 56 dogs this year and we won't destroy a dog without some kind of a paper trail like a disclaimer, when the dogs can't be lawfully rehomed, or a court order that says it must be destroyed.

"But if a court rules that a dog is not a danger to the public and the owner is a fit and proper person then nine times out of 10 that dog goes home."

Following a number of serious dog attacks on people, the Dangerous Dogs Act was passed in 1991, banning pit bull terriers, Japanese tosas, dogo Argentinos and fila Brasileiro dogs from being bred in Britain.

But DDA Watch, a campaign group set up to challenge the 1991 legislation, accused the Metropolitan Police of a "knee-jerk reaction".

"Animal campaigners want to see a change in the law," a spokesman said.

"Killing healthy animals that have done nothing wrong is inhumane. Dogs should be treated on a case-by-case basis and not have its fate sealed at birth because of its breed."

A spokesman for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs said the law should remain the same and its position was supported by the police.

He said: "Dog attacks can have horrific consequences for victims and families.

"While any dog can become dangerous if it is kept by irresponsible owners in the wrong environment, the prohibition of certain types of dog under the Dangerous Dogs Act is crucial to help us deal with the heightened risk they pose."

BSL is a cruel unnecessary law making thousands out of wrongly seizing innocent dogs from innocent families. The dogs are then either pts or locked up in secret awaiting assessment and court hearings sometimes taking months. All the while kennelling costs are charged to these families. It's corrupt in the way this law is implemented depending on where in the country a person lives in the country.

DEED NOT BREED!!!!!

Who are the real monsters here?  The innocent dogs that are judged by there appearance? Taken from there family, thrown into a horrible, lonely prison cell as that's what it like,  not aloud to see there owners again until it goes to court and that's if it goes to court?  When will the other end of the leash be punished? Deed not breed, stop punishing innocent dogs

i cannot understand DEFRA and the Police (ACPO) saying the law should stand. It doesn't work, it's discrimination . Why is it allowed to discriminate in 21st century ? A knee jerk reaction brought in by Kenneth Baker. How many more dogs have to die ? Repeal section one now, it's a waste of tax payers money, plus it's cruel, these dogs are seized and kept in kennels for months, even years before getting a court hearing. Most are returned home, proving the absurdity of the law !

I never understood why BSL exists in the first place & why the UK uses tax money to support the illegal taking of dogs from private property & murdering innocent dogs. Let alone spend 2 years torturing dogs while paying additional legal fees??

The government should focus on owners. If the owner is not capable of taking care of a dog OR if the dog is a danger to the environment it should be relocated to a save handler/home. This to prevent any dog attacks.

Deed Not Breed. Deed prevention. But never collective murder. I thought we where more humane?

This law needs to be abolished. The humans that abuse dogs are the ones needing to be put down.

It is barbaric to blame a whole breed! They know damn well! It's failed for years, people are still being bitten by dogs not on the dangerous dogs act, the problem lays with the owner, not the dog! Fix the problem, stop the slaughter! Tougher sentences for people that own dangerous DOGS not BREEDS! Asses properly, you can't just kill a dog for how it looks with no crime!!!!

I think the bsl law is ridiculous, it allows innocent dogs being taken from there loving families when they have done nothing wrong only by how they look. Any breed can be dangerous and dogs are being allowed to get away with being destroyed when it has attacked purely because it's not a 'type'. Since this law has been in place figures have risen in attacks, so I hope a new law is bought in place...one that works.

Taking family pets when they have done nothing wrong is barbaric.  Money would be better spent educating the police officers who take them.
