A man who left a dog in the middle of a field in Windsor, Canada with his muzzle taped shut and paws bound together will spend the next two years of his life in federal prison.

Michael Earl Hill entered a guilty plea on Monday morning to the charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. He will be sentenced to two years in a federal prison and be banned from owning an animal for 25 years.

The seven-year-old Patterdale terrier, now named Justice, belonged to a couple, Jessica Hems and Adam Esipu. They had a new baby who became allergic to the dog and paid Hill $60 to surrender Justice to the humane society.

The couple faced intense scrutiny online after Dean Cresswell found the dog. Cresswell posted to Facebook that he had found the dog and was looking for the dog's owners.

On December 18, Espiu turned Hill in to the humane society.

“There is no other way to describe this act; it’s a despicable act of depravity,” assistant Crown attorney Craig Houle told the court.

Hill's lawyer Ahmad Ammar has said that his client is extremely "remorseful" and had admitted to the crime since the beginning. Hill has been in solitary confinement since his arrest on December 18.

"We can't ask for anything more," Cresswell told the CBC. "I credit the gentleman for making a plea."

Justice remains in the care of the Windsor/Essex Humane Society where he underwent neuter surgery. He is also being treated for heart worms.

"We at the Humane Society are grateful that the Crown and Judge took Justice's case so seriously and imposed a sentence higher than is often given in animal cruelty cases," wrote the Windsor/Essex Humane Society on Facebook.

"We also thank Windsor Police Service for all their hard work throughout the investigation."

Editor's Note: It is a woeful shame that such sentences aren't imposed here in Ireland for such despicable acts.
