A dog has had both its eyes removed after having its eyes chemically burned.

It was found on Sunday on the Cork Road area of Waterford wandering in traffic by a member of the public.

The animal was reported to the Waterford Animal Welfare, after which their vet attended to the animal.

It was initially thought that the dog had been hit by a car but on later inspection it became obvious that it had in fact been chemically burned.

This made it necessary for her eyes to be removed in a surgical procedure.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Andrew Quinn from Waterford Animal Welfare, said that it was the first type he had seen an incident like this.

“For sure, we’ve seen a lot of different types of cruelty, but never seen someone deliberately blinding a dog,” he said.

“She still wants to chase cats, you know. Mentally she hasn’t been affected, but physically she has,” he said.

The animal is currently being cared for by another one of the carers from the organisation while she recovers from the operation. She will be available for adoption in around a week’s time.

Members of the public are able to express their interest by contacting Waterford Animal Welfare through their Facebook page or on 0876551152.
