Seriously sick dogs are being fed cannabis-laced treats in a bid to make their lives more bearable.
The reefer-spiked tidbits are the latest products to be marketed by the medical marijuana industry, reports Quartz.
Owners are doping up their ailing animals with hemp-derived products similar to those known to have helped humans stave off certain conditions such as glaucoma and arthritis.
Wendy Mansfield, of Fort Bragg, Calif., turned to weed to help her canine companion.
The day before her beloved 15-year-old Labrador retriever mix Kali was due to be put down, she decided to feed her a cookie from a marijuana dispensary specifically for dogs, according to Quartz.
The hound, who'd been suffering from chronic pain and was listless and depressed, almost immediately stopped licking her paws, which had been a sign that she was suffering.
After being fed two more treats, Kali suddenly got up to drink water and miraculously walked outside.
Mansfield canceled the vet's appointment, and says since that day three weeks ago, Kali's life has been transformed.
"Never in my wildest dreams would I have anticipated this. It brought my dog back," she told Quartz.
The legal marijuana industry earned $2.7 billion in the U.S. last year.
But the pet pot market is new, and experts say it's a "legal gray area," reports Time.
There are few industry guidelines or scientific evidence, the magazine adds.
Auntie Dolores, the Oakland, Calif.-based maker of edible marijuana goods whose treats Mansfield bought, launched its animal line last year.
The "Treatibles" are different from products aimed at humans in that they're made from hemp, which is the stem of the cannabis plant that's low in the psychoactive component THC.
