The search for an autism companion dog continues in Castleconnell, Limerick after he went missing – feared stolen – on Sunday night.

The Bernese Mountain Dog-Beagle cross belongs to 21-year-old Peter Meskell, and accompanies him during his day-to-day life. The dog is also trained to provide assistance with certain tasks.

Nuala Geraghty of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland said that 3-year-old Toby sleeps outside the Peter’s room every night, and walks with him into the local village each day.

She explained that these companion dogs go through years of training.

The demand for autism assistance dogs is huge – so much so that one organisation has a waiting list of five years for them.

Toby also suffers from an autoimmune disease, and requires steroids for pain relief. He is described as the size of a small Labrador, and is microchipped.
