Newfoundland Dog Breed Facts

The Newfoundland breed originated in Newfoundland due to importation by fishermen from Europe. This working dog helped fishermen to pull nets and bring in chopped wood from the forest. Newfoundland dogs have heavy coats that help them to sustain the cold during hard winters and also when swimming. They come in the colors of brown, white, grey, and black. There is another type, the Landseer whose coat is predominantly back with white patches usually around the chest, Landseers are among the most prized of Newfoundland colour types.

This large breed of dog has very strong life saving instincts that help them to be extremely capable of rescue maneuvers, especially in the water. Newfoundland dogs are not only comfortable in the water, but also on land. Today this breed competes quite often in obedience, tracking, agility, and carting. Calm and very loyal, the Newfoundland is a true friend whose nickname "gentle giant" is well earned.

Devoted and active, the Newfoundland has a sweet disposition which makes them great as pets. This breed is considered as stereotypically large, heavily coated, and muscular. Newfoundlands are very strong dogs, which makes them perfect not only as pets but as working dogs as well. The people on board threw a rope into the water which was retrieved by the dog and taken to shore. Once the rope had been secured on a buoy the stricken crew were able to use it to find their way to shore.
