New Springer Spaniel Puppy

  • 22/11/2010

The Springer Spaniel is a great dog but it requires a lot of time and exercise; if you can provide them with their needs they are an excellent dog.

Bringing home a cute Springer Spaniel puppy requires a lot of care and attention. It is best to get your puppy from a specialist breeder, one with kennel club registration is best. A good breeder will offer support if you require it and will be asking you questions to make sure their dogs go to a good home.

You usually will have to order a puppy before they are ready to go home, it is a good idea to take a good look at the mother as well as the new pups to make sure you are getting a good Springer Spaniel. Your new puppy will not be ready to take home until it is 8 weeks old, it is a good idea to wait this time do not try to convince the breeder to let you take the dog home early, in these early weeks it will learn a few natural skills from the rest of the pack, and you will have a better dog.

When you take the puppy home it will feel very lonely it will be used to it's pack and you are take it away from the only thing it knows. It is important to make your puppy feel at home, these early stages are very important, treat your dog correctly and the puppy will grow into a friendly and lively dog.

The puppyhood of your Springer Spaniel will last some time, maybe 2 or more years. You will have similar responsibilities to raising a child. There will be times when you will have to be soft and gentle, and times when you will have to be strict, so that your puppy keeps away from danger, and doesn't destroy your house. Regular exercise is very important a Springer Spaniel needs a walk every day, and I mean a walk not just let out in the garden. Training is also important I recommend you take your dog to a Kennel Club training centre it teaches your puppy good socialisation, even if you have trained dogs before, i would say these courses are a must and a good place to ask any questions you may have.

Just a quick note on names it is very tempting to give your dog a silly name especially if you ask your child to name your dog, before you give a dog a name imagine standing in a busy field shouting that name, if you think you will sound stupid, think of another name - you need to be confident in that name so the dog will come back.
