Legends And Myths About The Chihuahua

  • 27/02/2017

The story of a little dog chihuahua is covered with legends and myths, assumptions and fantastic beautiful stories.

It is known that the first who recognised the Chihuahua as a separate breed was the United States of America. For the first time in 1904 in the tribal register described dog female Midget of breeder H. Rainer from Texas, and twenty years later, already 170 dogs were entered in the stud book of America.

There is no doubt – these dogs belong to one of the most ancient and interesting breeds. About the origins of Chihuahua tell a lot of legends, and arguments are maintained to this day. The most popular and common origin story relates the appearance of this Chihuahua breed with the pre-Columbian civilisations – Toltecs, Aztecs and Mayans. Before the advent of Indian culture almost nothing was known about the breed, as well as it was little known about the very life of Indian tribes. The earliest evidence emerged during excavations of settlements in places of Toltecs, where they found the remains of small dogs. Toltecs were the tribes indigenous to Central America, occupying the largest area of the state, which is today Mexico. The dog was named “Techichi.” In history it has been speculated that the Toltecs came from the tribes Techichi Incas considered even earlier inhabitants of the earth. Presumably, this was the ancestor of the modern Chihuahua.

Many famous historians have studied the origin of Techichi. Archaeologists find remains of ancient Techichi at all sites in graves all over Mexico. For the ancient tribes, it was customary to be buried together with their dogs. The dog was sacrificed after the death of his master for the ritual of transferring all the sins of the deceased, thus releasing the dead from the responsibility for unjust acts. This guaranteed the owner a comfortable existence and eternal rest in the realm of the dead. In some cases, in this rite were used sculptures of dogs.

Civilisation of Indian tribes is perhaps the most enigmatic throughout the world and revered by their small dogs, a religious and mystical life of the Indians played an important role. Toltecs were conquered by the Aztecs and Aztec civilisation lasted for 500 years to as long as the Spanish conquerors led by Cortez conquered the country in the early 16th century, and small dogs were on the verge of disappearing. Some dogs found refuge with local families of peasants, others escaped into the wild and managed to survive and prove their right to independent existence in this harsh world. (According to legend the ancestors of Chihuahua climbed trees like little monkeys, and only under this condition, these chips could survive). Now, wild dog, known as «Perro Chihuahuaeno», lives in parts of northern Mexico. These wild dogs are different types with attributes of modern Chihuahua.

Researchers and archaeological excavations proved that Techichi is the oldest breed of dogs in the America, and, in some sense, it is a thoroughbred dog. Breeders in different countries often claim that this breed takes one of the most important places in the history of ancient and modern dogs.

But there are other versions of the origin of the Chihuahua. According to one modern version, the Chihuahua was the result of mixing of Techichi with a small hairless dog, which appeared from the east, probably from China, through the isthmus between two continents, which was on the site of today’s Bering Strait.

There is also a version that the home of the dogs is Egypt. Mummified remains of a little dog with a characteristic fontanel (Mahler) on the skull, were found in Egyptian tombs, dated to about 3 thousand years BC. On the remains were collars, decorated with precious stones.

According to other researchers, the origin of the breed, the home of the Chihuahua is found in Europe, more precisely in Malta. On this island, there was already small breed dogs, endowed, like the Chihuahua breed distinctive feature – “Mahler”, or parietal fontanel. For the other dog breeds, such fontanelle is extremely rare. An important argument in favour of the theory of European origin of the breed is wall-painting “scene from the life of Moses” that adorns the Sistine Chapel, founded in 1482 by the famous Botticelli Alessandro, which shows a dog, like a chihuahua. Note that this fact indicates the existence of this breed in Europe, before sailing caravels of Christopher Columbus. If this theory is correct, it could be that the Spanish conquistadors did not bring the dogs in the Old World, but instead took them from Europe to travel to the shores of India.

The author of one interesting theory claims that the ancestor of the modern Chihuahua was Fenech that lives in the deserts of North Africa. Fenech – the smallest member of the canine, it is smaller than the size of the domestic cat. Height at withers 18-22 cm, body length – 30-40 cm, tail – up to 30 cm, weighs 1.5 kg. It has huge ears (they help to cool in hot climates) and large round eyes, so reminiscent of eyes and ears of chihuahua.

Still there is one version of the origin of the Chihuahua is probably the weirdest. Chihuahua – are messengers of space far unknown extraterrestrial civilizations, and, specifically, through Mahler is made connection with the cosmos. For some reason there is a hole in the skull of chihuahua. Maybe, for communication with unearthly civilizations?

There are all sorts of puzzles, bizarre and beautiful. For example, a version of the Indians – it came from the wild tribes of the Siberian taiga. They came to the America along the isthmus in place of the Bering Strait, and who knows, maybe brought with them some small animals.

And how do you like this legend? The Indians hunted jaguars with small dogs. The dogs lured the cats into the thicket of cactus. Small dogs ran downstairs where the tree trunk, and cats from ran into barbed wire stuck in the bush. Interesting, but doesn’t seem true.

Where to look for the roots of the Chihuahua – I don’t know. May be in Egypt or Europe, and perhaps still in Mexico. Or anywhere on their own there was some special little dogs and between them there is no connection at all. Somewhere they’re gone forever, and somewhere survived.

The true origin of the Chihuahua forever remains a mystery.
