Is a Wire Haired Miniature Dachshund the Right Dog For Me?
- 27/11/2010
The Wire Haired Miniature Dachshund is an adorable fun loving dog with a mind of his own. Understanding what drives him and how he thinks will go a long way in living in harmony instead of thinking you made the biggest mistake of your life. Here are some things that explain why this breed acts the way it does.
All Dachshunds are "scent" hounds, they follow their nose. What he smells on the ground is way more interesting to him than obeying the "sit" command. As a result of being a scent hound, Wire Haired Miniature Dachshunds are independent little dogs. When being used to track their quarry, they must work ahead independent of their masters, nose to ground intent on finding the "prize". This is what years of breeding tell him to do, it's nothing personal.
In addition to following their nose, they were also bred to "go to ground". Their long tubular shape and wide stubby feet, lends itself to efficiently digging up anything willing to hide underground. The name Dachshund means "Badger Hound" in German. Finding and digging up badgers requires a good bit of tenacity and bravery, and the dachshund is often more courageous than his size would indicate.
While being courageous with a bit of a stubborn streak, the other side of the Wire Haired Miniature Dachshund is quite loving and affectionate. They tend to be one person dogs and their loyalty is unfaltering.
The tenacious and stubborn side of them can make them a bit difficult to train, but well worth the effort. These dogs don't tolerate probing hands and fingers and are not usually suitable for small children. But if you are looking for the quintessential lap dog, with firm loyalty and a rugged playfulness, then a Wire haired Miniature Dachshund just might be for you.
