If You Want a Faithful Companion, the Little-Known Japanese Chin May Be the Dog For You
- 20/11/2010
A little-known but very good companion dog for anyone from children to seniors is the Japanese Chin.
Often called the Japanese Spaniel this dog is thought to have originated in China where it was the favorite of the royal families. Paintings of the Japanese Chin have been found in ancient temples and on pottery and embroidery. It was brought over to Japan around 700 A.D. and became a favorite of the Japanese royal family also. In fact, the word "chin" means "royalty" in Japanese.
Excellent, Smart Companion
Japanese Chins are friendly, sociable dogs that are highly intelligent and responsive. Your Chin will need very little obedience training.
They are known to get along well with people of all ages and especially love children - provided that the children treat them gently and with respect.
These dogs do well in small city apartments but also love the suburbs and even the open country life.
One thing that many people find amusing is there tendency to behave like a cat by using their paws to scoop up food and even to clean their faces. Also much like many cats, they love to nap on a warm lap.
Appearance and Needs
The average Japanese Chin stands about 8 to 10 inches tall and weights 4 to 11 pounds.
The have a thick coat of long hair all over their bodies -- which may be one drawback for many people. Surprisingly though, they do not shed a lot and need only twice a week or so grooming.
Their head is round and broad with large eyes and a short snout. Think "Pekingese"
Japanese Chins typically live for 12 to 14 years.
Consider one if you are looking for a loyal, smart and sociable new companion.
